The YouTube app instead pauses the video and brings up their clunky playback bar and related video thumbnails. One example: on the remote you can click left or right to quickly skip back or ahead 10 seconds. So not only do they not follow the same controls as every other app, making users learn two different styles of interaction, they're worse on top of that. If they were better than Apple's, one could make an argument as to why Google should use theirs over Apple's, but they clearly aren't better. The playback controls are probably the worst thing about the app.

The YouTube app's lists don't do this (compare to say, the Settings app) and thumbnails do a sort of poor man's version trying to at least mimic the effect (it didn't used to do it at all, so that's at least an improvement).

When you navigate lists, app icons or video thumbnails across tvOS, the selected items sort of pop out larger a bit, hovering and animating with a subtle parallax effect to inform the user what is clearly selected (and feel fluid and responsive while doing so). The biggest issue boils down to Google trying to make one design that they apply to EVERY device, this way they don't have to have a team spend time designing the app to fit Apple's specific Human Interface Guidelines.
